Abstract

In this paper, I analyze the concept of common nature in the works of St. Thomas Aquinas and Duns Scotus. I aim to demonstrate how their perspectives influenced Charles S. Peirce's scholasticism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. To accomplish this, I will start by examining the concepts of common nature in both Thomas Aquinas and Duns Scotus, highlighting their resemblances and disparities. Afterward, I will investigate how Peirce incorporates these ideas and what adjustments he makes to shape his scholastic realism. The purpose of this work is to elucidate the continuity between Peirce's realism and the realism of medieval scholars who were focused on the problem of universals and aimed to provide a realist solution to it.
