Abstract

In this work we will describe the general characteristics of 'political polarization', a phenomenon that is not exclusive to these latitudes but is present in various regions of the globe with very different cultures. To do this, we will distinguish between two different conceptions of it: on the one hand, 'ideological polarization' and, on the other hand, 'affective polarization'. As we will argue, the second can be understood as a high degree of political polarization that can put the foundations of a democratic society at risk.
