The evidentiary paradigm as the epistemological basis of narrative medicine

Abstract

This paper proposes that a possible answer to these questions lies in the confluence of three intellectual traditions that, in our view, those who practice narrative medicine have perhaps used partially and intuitively: Carlo Ginzburg's microhistory and evidential paradigm, Charles Sanders Peirce's logic of abductive inference, and the notion of connoisseurship[1] as a model of cultivable tacit knowledge. Their systematic articulation not only allows narrative medicine to broaden its epistemological ground but also to enrich and refine its practices from within.
